Susan Rothenberg Susan Rothenberg's paintings are very interesting and unique. The way she choses to incorporate memory in her art is unique. Every painting is connected through the mixture of the same colors and brushes. She tries to make the experience recurring. She has a very abstract way of painting. Most of the objects, animals, and people in her paintings look like impressions of what they would look like in really life. She also uses a lot of color in her paintings. She states how she doesn’t like to use pure color but instead mix them with other colors to get a duller appearance. She also goes on to explain why all her paintings are painted in birds eye view. It is a view that not many painters use unless painting landscapes. It makes her paintings even more interesting to look at and see things in the way she perceives things. Everyone perceives memories in their own way and Susan Rothenberg's perception was truly unique and different.

Audio ArtJanet Cardiff is a well-known audio artist. One of her sound installations called “The Forty Part Motet” was created in 2001 but recently was shown in the Fuentidueña Chapel, The Cloisters from September 10 to December 8, 2013. “Regarded as the artist's masterwork, and consisting of forty high-fidelity speakers positioned on stands in a large oval configuration throughout the Fuentidueña Chapel, the fourteen-minute work, with a three-minute spoken interlude, will continuously play an eleven-minute reworking of the forty-part motet Spem in alium numquam habui by Tudor composer Thomas Tallis” (metmuseum.org). Viewers are able to walk around the installation and experience the sounds from every angle. “The Forty Part Motet is most often presented in a neutral gallery setting, but in this case the setting is the Cloisters' Fuentidueña Chapel, which features the late twelfth-century apse from the church of San Martín at Fuentidueña, near Segovia, Spain, on permanent loan from the Spanish Government. Set within a churchlike gallery space, and with superb acoustics,” (metmuseum.org). It truly is an amazing piece where every voice can be heard throughout the installation. The fact that it was installed in the Fuentidueña Chapel only enhances the experience of the piece for the viewer. Animation Installation ArtJacolby Satterwhite is a very unique artist that creates diverse and memorable animations. Satterwhite has a very unique and different style of art that has never been seen before. This gives him an advantage and makes his pieces more interesting and eye catching. The piece I chose above is called “Transit”. Above is a video still of “Transit” from Reifying Desire 6 that was created this year. “Transit” has a combination of HD digital video, color, and 3-D animation. This piece has been shown in Courtesy OHWOW Gallery, Los Angeles and Mallorca Landings Gallery, Spain. Currently this piece is in the 2014 Whitney Biennial. “Transit” gives the viewer a look into a surreal world that becomes an experience for the viewer. What makes this piece and many of Jacolby Satterwhite’s other pieces so successful is the combination of different art styles and forms into one project. I find his work very entertaining and interesting. His art is out of the box and breaks art confinements that many other artworks don’t. He pushes the limits of his imagination and creates new worlds for his viewers to experience. I look forward to what he will create in the future and what new heights he will reach with his art.
Bottle by Kirsten LeporeBottle from Kirsten Lepore on Vimeo. Bottle by Kirsten Lepore is a short stop motion film that has gained the attention of the film community. This short stop motion film was nominated in 2010 for Short of the Year by shortoftheweek.com. Kirsten Lepore has also gone on to win the Vimeo Audience Award for Animation. She has created other short stop motion films that are just as creative and captivating as the film Bottle. However, many would argue that Bottle is her most successful and inspiring piece of art yet. Bottle is a touching story about two friends that are separated by the sea and communicate by sending things in a bottle across the sea. Kirsten Lepore ability to create a story that is not only clever and interesting, but also emotionally captivating is amazing. She uses a simple concept to create a huge effect by her amazing ability to storyline. Bottle also showcases Kirsten Lepore’s talent for using the environment and nature to create art. The effort and work it must have taken to create a piece like this is true dedication. She pushes the boundaries of the possibilities of creating art through nature that people can relate to. Her ability to create a captivating and emotional story within such a small amount of time is true talent. She has motivated me to incorporate more nature into my art and to create mesmerizing stories that touch my viewers. Art that is EntertainingAndric Ljubodrag is a great photo artist. He first began as a photographer doing advertisement for many different companies. His background in advertising has helped him create interesting and entertaining pieces of art. Many of his pieces show illusions or things that are out of the ordinary and impossible. He knows how to capture and keep the attention of the viewer. Andric Ljubodrag has become very popular and successful with his pieces and today works with many well-known brands. It is hard to pick just one of his pieces that I really enjoy. The image that is shown above is one of my favorite pieces by Andric Ljubodrag because of the scenery and the illusion that the woman is floating on an umbrella in the middle of the sea. Andric Ljubodrag has many other pieces that have a similar illusion of a woman doing impossible things and they are all creative and entertaining pieces. Another piece that I found very creative is the one shown below. The graphic effects are amazing and the irony behind the image. Andric Ljubodrag has influenced me to try to push the limits of my skills and also to create entertaining pieces that will capture the attention of my viewers.
Art and ExpressionShepard Fairey’s life story of struggle and success is very interesting and motivating. He struggled financially for years trying to share his artwork with the world and get exposure. His type of art expression is also a difficult field because in society it is looked down upon and in most places is illegal. He puts himself at jeopardy for the sake of expression and art. The videos gave great insight into how he creates his pieces and the actual risk he faces. I find that many of his pieces are interesting and a unique form of art. I especially like his Andre the Giant poster because it’s a simple image with a lot of meaning behind it. I think that there is a fine line between right and wrong when it comes to appropriation. I don’t think that Shepard should have been sued because he did state where his inspiration came from. I understand copy right laws and plagiarism, however in some cases like many of Shepard’s work the art is not a replica of the original, it is a transformation. He uses other art as inspiration to create new pieces. It becomes harder and harder to create original artwork when many ideas have been done before.
Inspiring StoryAi Weiwei is an amazing artist and an inspiration. His pieces of art are innovative, different, and interesting. What sets Ai Weiwei apart from other artist is not just his skills in making art but the story that is being told through his art. He challenges the norm of society and tries to get people to think about what is going on around them. His pieces are very politically controversial and that is what makes the appealing. His pieces also tell his personal story and viewers get a look into his life and what he believes. I can’t single out any of Ai Weiwei’s pieces that I like the most because they are all amazing, different, and important in their own way. The Art 21 documentary of Ai Weiwei seemed more tense and serious than any other interviews he has done because of the surrounding controversy of his release after going missing for two months in a half. It seemed like he wasn’t able to fully express himself in explaining the ideas behind his pieces. It was a short interview that I wish hadn’t been tainted by the situation he was currently in. His story and art will forever be an inspiration to many across the world and art community.
Art Is An ExperienceOlafur Eliasson is known for creating sculptures and making space a vital part of his pieces. He has done many projects around the world and one of the pieces he is most famous for is the ”Spiral Pavilion” he created in 1999. He is a talented artist known for creating artistic environments with his creations and incorporating the elements. Not only can viewers go see his pieces but they can also interact with his art and become a part of the experience. By creating environments with his art his viewers are able to connect with his pieces and it creates a deeper experience than traditional galleries. My favorite piece by Olafur Eliasson is “The New York City Waterfalls” because it is a place I have been many times and the size of this project is amazing. His pieces have influenced me to think outside the box and not only create art but create experiences.
